PhilCon 2009 – Promoting Sci-Fi and Fantasy through Learning, Arts, and Fun!

Posted in Fantasy

PhilCon, the annual science fiction conference sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society will be back this year to promote science fiction, fantasy, and horror in literature, the arts, and popular culture. From November 20 to 22, the Crowne Plaza Hotel will accommodate up to a thousand fans, so make reservations early to assure that you’ll be one of those!

As usual, Philcon will be having Panels that cover a wide range of topics, from art to science, literature and late night discussions. So take this chance to feed your curiosity with priceless learning from the pros, while getting to express thoughts from your POV. Contrary to its formal conference side, there will be a lot of informal, laid back fun to engage in, to meet people from all walks of life that share the same passion with you and beyond.

Right after the opening ceremonies kicks off, the Art Show will be open to the congoers, where the Meet the Pros Conference will commence. This is the chance to meet, greet, and have pictures taken with your favorite authors, artists, scientists, and more! After this, the PhilCon Social and Dance will let people old and new mingle together and dance the night away. A formal dress code is encouraged, or come in your own Goth, Victorian, Steampunk, Cyberpunk, Kimono, Fairy, or any unique costume of your fantasy.

On the other hand, the Formal Masquerade on Saturday night will let your creativity and cosplay skills flourish. Relive the Gothic Lolita look, or a valiant Knight complete with swords, and win the heart of the crowd with your ballroom skills and chivalry. But if you want, you could enjoy wearing your costume all weekend long, and be awarded with hall costume award ribbons while enjoying your sweet escape from mediocre clothing.

From some interactive, geeky fun, their video gaming area will also be open throughout the weekend. This is a “bring your own game” rule, so expect to be challenged by other adept gamers, while having the chance to learn new games that that they bring.

Filking, or folk music with a fantasy / science fiction theme will also be happening, so take this opportunity to mix your love of music with your fondness of sci-fi and fantasy. Gather your energy for this will be happening throughout the nights, or simply bask under the others’ pampering music as you lay yourself to sleep.

Lots of other contests, activities, and awards to be given away in three whole days of fun! To learn more of these, please visit the Philcon 2009 website.
