The four weekends from November 27 up to December 20, the San Franciso’s Cow Palace Exhibition Halls will breathe life into the Victorian London Town perceived by Charles Dickens’ genius mind. Your holiday season will be turned into an adventure with the hundreds of colorful characters from both history and literature and the myriad of activities that awaits you in the event.

Get the chance to meet your favorite characters from Dicken’s London Town, including Oliver Twist, The Artful Dodger, Mad Sal and her Awfully Jolly Girls, Sir Richard Francis Burton, Dr. David Livingston, and Mr. Pickwick. The villainous counterparts in Dickens’ tales won’t be left out as well, so expect to rub elbows with Ebenezeer Scrooge and the creepy trio of Christmas Ghosts among others. Since this fair takes place in the Yuletide breeze, Father Christmas will also be there to fill the young ones with bliss.

The entertainment levels for you and your family will be kept intense by the continuous performances in the streets and on six stages situated throughout the area. You could choose from an affluent entertainment selection, from song and dance numbers in Fezziwig’s Warehouse, cheerful music hall performances in Mad Sal’s Dockside Alehouse, boisterous favorites in the broadside Musical Hall show, to even a Naughty French Postcards Revue for mature audiences. On the other hand, kids will be filled with delight in the Sugarplum Playhouse and the witty antics of Mr. Punch and Judy.

If you’re set for adventure then keep your sheathed swords at the ready and enter the Adventurer’s Club and experience the tales of military and scientific exploits firsthand. The Victorian Royal Household may also make an appearance so don’t be surprised to bump into a beefeater complete with a bearskin hat and a seven-foot partisan.

Let the enticing aromas of hearty treats and roasted chestnuts captivate your senses and treat your taste buds to the food from the British Empire and beyond. The cries of street vendors scattered about the over 90,000 square feet of the London charm will give you an opportunity of getting your hands at various Victorian arts and crafts. As for the new events this year, each attendee will be dubbed a Victorian name along with a passport to the past in all eight days filled with the holiday spirit and humor.

For more information about the fair, please visit the Great Dickens Christmas Fair website.

For thirty-five years, the Dickens on The Strand Festival has been synonymous with family enjoyment, holiday shopping sprees, and never ending entertainment. But aside from these, it is also well known for the massive influx of visitors who come aboard the festivities by donning their finest Victorian attire.

The Dickens on The Strand Festival is a yearly holiday festival focusing on the Victorian theme. Scheduled for the first weekend of December (5 and 6) this year, the streets of the historic downtown Galveston will be filled with various merchants, magicians, jugglers, acrobats, Victorian-era musicians and clowns, as well as other participants reveling in the royal, Victorian atmosphere.

Dressing the part of a Victorian gentleman or lady will not only let you blend in with the crowd for maximum enjoyment, but will also reduce your admission price for the festival in the first place. Coming up with such a look isn’t hard at all, and it could be as easy as dragging your mom’s vintage dress or your grandpa’s old suit and tweak it up by adding some touches that you may see from the movie adaptations of Charles Dickens’ classic novels.

Don’t forget that this Victorian era revolves not only around the resurrection of Charles Dickens’ characters, but also of the majestic rule of Her Royal Highness herself. Ladies of all age could dress up as the Queen if desired, while men could dress up as gallant knights wielding their swords, armor, and shields for an extra, realistic feel. Take time on your costume and join in the Dickens Costume Contest that will showcase the most creative, Victorian fashionistas for the day.

Aside from the costume contest, other festivities include the Queen’s Parades, Pickwick’s Lanternlight Parade, Childrens Activities, Dickens Book Signings, London Wharf, and of course, a seemingly endless entertainment and holiday shopping spree!

For an in-depth look at the Festival and the Galveston Historical Foundation, visit them at the Galveston History Organization website.

For the 11th consecutive year, the Ingleside Renaissance Faire will lift the darkness of the nights like a veil and recreate the past in Live Oak Park. Knights, king and queens, fairies, fair maidens, commoners, and court jesters will be roaming the land, but tread carefully because under the massive oak trees of the park dwell elves, trolls, goblins, dragons, and other creatures from the lost, golden age.

The event will transpire on December 12 to 13, and as the King decreed, the festival shall unleash the pageantry and chivalry of the Renaissance through music, dance, entertainment, and many different programs. For two whole days, fairgoers will experience firsthand the crafts, arts, magic, and folklore of these old times, and get a chance to bring home a souvenir from the numerous, diverse craftsmen and merchants situated throughout the park.

As part of the festivities, there will be many challenging feats to test your strength and skill. On its flip side, a cornucopia of mouthwatering food from the renaissance await you. Players, performers and actors will also treat you to different levels of fun and awe, from awe-inspiring swords play and jousting, to belly-busting comedy acts.

Take off with your friends or bring the whole family along in this journey to the past, and if desired, you could also grab the opportunity to dress in the full, glorious fashion of the renaissance and merge with the crowd. On the other hand, if you have a related talent or exhibit to showcase, or some artwork or crafts that you’re planning to put on sale, this is also the perfect chance to do so and get a hold of some extra money for Christmas.

Whether you’re a fairgoer, entertainer, artist, fighter, performer, bard, dancer, artisan, vendor or merchant, you could be a part of this old European era and relish every second of it. And there’s no better place to discover, experience, and celebrate the golden time of the renaissance, than the relaxing woods with its embracing, stress busting breeze to take you away from the vexations of modern living.

Once again, the wonderful presenter of the North Carolina Renaissance Faire, known as the Historical Enrichment Society will be celebrating the Yuletide Season with a touch of the Renaissance in their annual Camelot Christmas. On December 5 and 6, Wake Forest will be blessed with a winter festival that’s filled with joy, through songs, dances, entertainments, various merriment activities and present the most unique gifts of the season!

You will not only get to celebrate the Christmas season with a medieval breeze, but also get to meet the royal, swords wielding Knights of the Round Table like Sir Lancelot, the legendary King Arthur, and more. Of course, the fair maidens by their sides won’t be missed, specifically Lady Guinevere and the irresistible enchantress, Lady Morgana. King Arthur’s fabled reliving is incomplete without his magical aid, the powerful wizard Merlin, who will also be there to amaze children with amazing, spells-conjuring feats.

Faires like these are an excuse to dress up and get medieval, as nobles, peasants, fairies, sorcerers and sorceresses, knights, fair maidens, and other entities from King Arthur’s reign will gather around the Olde Yule Log, so don your best attire representing the medieval times and be part of the celebration.

Vendors will be scattered throughout the fairgrounds as well, offering different arts and crafts for you to take home, as well as fun and challenging services that will keep you and your whole family entertained. Expect to see woodworks, metalworks, medieval accessories, medieval garb, and treat yourself to a cornucopia of food and drinks from the renaissance period. If you are planning to be a vendor, then seize the moment and be one in this faire, and take advantage of this prime shopping weekend. What’s even better is that if you’re an artisan demonstrating crafts, or educational displays, and a nonprofit organization, the noble people behind this event will be paying special consideration to you/your organization, unlike other faires or festivals that charge the same whether you fit in these categories or not.

Programs and further details will be announced closer to the event, and to keep track of this, visit the Camelot Christmas website.

The Secret Masters of Fandom Convention or SMOF con is an annual gathering where the members get together and share insights into what has transpired during the previous year, at both their local level and at the most recently held meeting of the massive, World Science Fiction Society.

Taking place this year at the Hilton Garden Inn in Austin, Texas, the SMOF con 27 plans on both entertaining and challenging you for a whole weekend of fun, various activities, and meeting diverse people, including Sci-Fi lovers, fantasy buffs, and other fans like you!

Every SMOF con has a theme which helps focus the gathering as a whole, and for the upcoming 27th convention, the theme will be concentrating on Time Management. Now if you’re a convention runner, planning to be one, or have someone dear to you who has this passion, then you better come Friday (December 4) and take part in the Budget Boot Camp. This will aid convention runners in planning their budgets whether it’s a large convention or even a humble one.

As of now, the programming schedules are still in the pipeline, but like its predecessor, expect that SMOF con 27 will feature a variety of activities. Convention related-events like a costume contest complete with props such as makeshift swords and guns, sci-fi movie showcasing, socializing in convention bars and parties, attending panels with a variety of subjects are only some of the possible activities on the menu, so keep an eye out for these.

More than just a convention dedicated to physically-exhausting activities, SMOF con will be centering on a lot of talking. Conversations like catching up on the latest rumors and gossips on associated matters, attending panels featuring diverse subjects regarding convention running, and you’ll not only be a listener but you’ll also get to express your views about how to do something the best way, and whatever is in your mind.

More than just an entertaining experience, the SMOF con proves to be a gathering that promotes learning. Though it is not as big as the WSFS’ World Con, it’s a fun and educating experience that will shake you at the core.

For more information, please visit the Secret Masters of Fandom Convention website.

The three day, multi-genre convention known as Kajonk-A-Con, or simply KAC, will return this year to Knoxville, Tennessee! From December 4 to 6, at 600 Henley St., anime fans, manga fanatics, music buffs, videogame/tabletop/pc gamers, and anyone else who enjoy getting having fun will gather and bring their diverse fandom fantasies to life.

Last year’s KAC gathering was a success, and now the wonderful organizers, staff, and sponsors of the con are looking to top the previous total attendance, by maintaining their 71% cheaper, but 100% more fun tagline, along with added events, new gimmicks and better advertising means.

KAC has the usual, much celebrated convention events including a cosplay contest which is broken down into two separate events. One of the cosplay contests requires no skits, so don’t worry if your costume will take a month to make, while the other cosplay contest is for skits, meaning you have to reserve enough time to perfect your anime swords slashing act and not just let your costume do all the talking.

The AMV contest on the other hand, will let you concoct your own anime and music combo, and see how well you link the two. A Guest Q & A will feed your curiosity with the expert’s insights, while the raves will evaporate your shyness away as you feel the heat of the dance floor. The con’s very own KAC Idol Contest will also be returning, so its time to let out your beauty combined with some mad cosplay skills.

For some thumb-numbing, button mashing challenge, a series of game tournaments await you in this fun filled event, with hits like Rock Band 2, Supersmash brothers (2on2 and 1on1 tourneys), Naruto Clash of the Ninjas 2 Revolutions, Guitar Hero 3, Mortal Kombat Armageddon, Guilty Gear. Tekken 5, and DDR.

A range of panels, workshops, will give you a crash course of various, new stuff, and feed your curiosity with the insights of the experts themselves. This year, new events will also be added, like the “Sailor Moon” and Post-bubble Japan, and the Art and Application of Feng Shui Principle.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for booths presenting the latest hits from the top gaming publishers and developers, as well as the vendors offering rare, imported science fiction/fantasy and anime collectibles.

For a full events and guest list, please visit the Kajonk-A-Con website.

If you haven’t got enough of fall’s medieval vibe, then the 99 Renaissance Faire may just be the right fix for you! Running from November 14 to 15, it’ll be a full weekend of relishing the Elizabethan reign. Though the faire is new and lasts only for two days, it does pack the right blend of sights, sounds, entertainment, learning, and of course, a cornucopia of mouthwatering, medieval treats.

To keep the energy high for a full renaissance experience, there will be a couple of comedy acts, jugglers, dancers, musicians, bards, workshops, various street performers, and more. The performers to round these up include the blazing crew of the Tip Hat Show, to amaze us with their fire manipulation and mad contortion skills. The Village Blacksmith on the other hand will show us the art of forging swords and other metal works while her wife treat our ears to a fantastic storytelling.

Teatro De Espana and Daredevil Chicken Club will fill the air with your laughter, with their song, dance, and theatrical mix, while La Voltige will show off his incredible horse riding skills. If this crazy commoner can’t amaze you with his extreme, upside-down riding, then I don’t know what will!

The Royal Saint Gyles Renaissance Actors Guild, will blend in the crowd complete with renaissance garb, and if you want to do so too, you’re very much welcome to come in your own renaissance / medieval attire! Meanwhile, acrobatic jugglers in the form of the Kondor Brothers will have you at awe with their extreme balancing feats!

Since the festival is only a more two weeks after Halloween, a fraction of the creepy entities that’s spawned by the dark will still be around, and roam the streets and scare us off guard when least expected! Among these are the gigantic Troll and his dog, and the Danse Macabre group with their zombie-like gaze. Fortunately, there will also be German Mercenaries scattered about the area, and of course, them pretty damsels and noble gents to keep our spirit high. These women are the Les Femmes D’Affaire – Clan OHottie’s, a band of courtesans of wit, charm, and talent.

The Sol Luna Belly Dance Troup will enchant you with their very graceful belly dancing skills, while Mezmeron the comedian slash magician will attempt hypnotism, and keep you laughing with his every try.

These activities and entertainment await you and your family in the 99 Renaissance Festival, at the same time taking your mind away from the vexations of life and transport you into the magical world of the renaissance period.

After releasing a heart-breaking statement last May that they won’t be running a convention this 2009 due to the costs involved, Starbase Indy had a sudden change of heart thanks to the release of the recent Star Trek movie! Now, this intimate convention that’s run by sci-fi fans has confirmed that they won’t just fade away into obscurity, but rather be back for a bigger and better year that will bring back the smiles on the faces of fans from the sci-fi fandom and beyond!

The return of Starbase Indy will take place on the Indianapolis Marriot East, which has a massive capacity for meeting space, wonderful guest rooms and suites. So expect that the convention will make the most of these and their much anticipated return, and have something much bigger and more exciting stuff in store for fans like you in three days of interactive, entertaining, and educational fun!

This year’s festivities will include a Robot Building panel, Star Wars and Doctor Who heroes designing, a Klingon Conversation Pit, Critter Course Competition, Stepchild Karaoke, Rave Dancing for people 21 years old and below, Screen Writing, a Workshop for Making Lightweight Armour, and a Book / DVD / CD Exchange session.

There will also be Robot Battles that will pit the talent and skills of robot makers against each other, and let their robotic creations do the talking by hacking and slashing their swords and other weapons against each other and leave only the best robot standing.

Of course, this marvelous convention that lets sci-fi fantasies and reality collide won’t miss out on a costume masquerade. This is the perfect opportunity to showcase your own Klingon look, a Vulcan impersonation, Captain Kirk reanimation, or other sci-fi and fantasy characters that you have been dying to relive.

Since gaming is a must have entertainment for science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts, and currently, there are over a dozen games both old school and fresh ones that have been confirmed in the games list. Science Fiction Roleplaying, Open Gaming on Boardgames, a Hollow Earth Expedition RPG, Robo Rally, Trinity, Tribble Toss, Star Trek Uno, Space Hulk-Special SBI Edition, D&D 4th Edition, and Are you the Evil Kirk?

Guests of honor are Garrett Wang, William Morgan Sheppard, Jeff Rector, and Debra “Downey” Lyons, who are multi talented stars that have been a part of the Star Trek movies saga, as well as David Reddick, who runs a comic strip dedicated to the said film.

Although Starbase Indy was primarily a convention dedicated to Star Trek in the past, and its return was prompted by the launch of the new Star Trek film, you don’t necessarily have to love the said film in order to enjoy this convention. After all, the return of Starbase Indy is not meant to boost the movie alone, but rather bring fans together and enable them to share and enjoy their passion for sci-fi and fantasy that they so truly love.

For more information, please visit the Starbase Indy website.

Anime Aftermath, which is Valdosta State University’s premier anime organization, will be having their first ever Kaji Con this November 14 to promote the swiftly growing anime industry in North America. A plethora of interactive events, screenings, and of course some crazy anime fun will be set to feed the hunger of anime fans, and serve as a beacon of light to introduce new people to the magical world of anime!

Kaji, which means “blaze” in Japanese, serve the name of Valdosta University’s first ever anime convention very aptly. Aside from paying tribute to the VSU Blazers, it will also serve as a trailblazing path to guide anime fans to the fulfillment of their anime dreams, and give them something to look forward to each year that will add color to their world before the winter season sets in.

Unfortunately, since this is Kaji Con’s first year, there will be no dealer’s room or artists’ alley either. On the flip side however, the convention will be an absolutely no-cost event for its patrons as opposed to big-time conventions that could drain all your money just by paying at the expensive door fee alone.

Aside from the Costume Contest that most, if not all anime conventions have, Kaji Con will also be having games that would definitely give new twists to the world of anime conventions.

Anime Aftermath’s twistedly amusing founder will be having his own original contest, known as “Darcy’s House of Torture”. This will have the participants go against bizarre obstacles and tasks, and make Naruto’s Chounin Exam look as if it’s easy as pie. Aside from the challenge that the game presents, fun and hilarity will surely ensue too, that’s for sure!

Creative rendering of existing game shows and anime games will also be featured. One of these are the “Who’s That Character?” which is a spin-off to Pokemon’s eye catching game of “Who’s That Pokemon?”. This time though, various silhouettes of anime characters will be presented for you to guess, and not just Pokemons, and in the process test how wide your knowledge of anime characters is!

Aside from this, there will also be an Anime Jeopardy, which is a spin-off to the hit TV quiz show; Iron Artist, which is an artistic rendering of the TV classic Iron Chef; Anime Pictionary, and the Anime Name That Tune!

Of course, anime conventions are not only intended to provide fun and entertainment, but promote education as well. Informative Panels will be set up to feed the curiosity of the congoers, and at the same time present new activities that will keep them on their competitive edge.

For example, the Pirate versus Ninja debate will have fans of the rum-chugging, gun-totting buccaneers go against the art and swords of the Ninja fanatics, and have their pros and cons weighed for fans of both worlds to consider. There will also be a Video Game Room that will feature old-school games like the SNES hit Mario Kart to the freshly baked BlazBlue of the PS3!

A Theatre-style Viewing Room will also be featured to let you sit back and chill while watching anime classics to those that are fresh and new!

For more information, please visit the Anime Aftermath website.
