English Swords

The mortuary hilt sword is a popular English sword, identifiable by its distinctive basket hilt which often features very elaborate design and sculpting. This cut-and-thrust weapon was used by cavalry in the English Civil War. It was also preferred by Oliver Cromwell, and sometimes these British swords are called Cromwell swords. The original sword that Cromwell owned is now in the Royal Armouries Museum. Our selection of English swords for sale includes mortuary swords, mercenary swords, bastard swords, and more. These replicas are made of high quality materials by well-known forges. And even more good news: we have swords on sale that are available at special prices.

Stylish hilts are a common feature of many British swords. Elizabethan backswords had simple hilts with a knuckle bow; straight or counter-curved quillons; fully developed arms; and a ring guard on one side of the cross, though sometimes there was one on each side. Broadswords had basket hilts, with the earlier models having long quillons, while the later swords had only one rear quillon and two loops at the bottom front of the basket. Another type of broadsword had a basic cross hilt. Rapiers and riding swords had similar hilts. The earlier variety had a knuckle bow, straight or counter-curved quillons, and arms that extended from the knuckle bow to the rear arm. Later models began to have cup hilts.

The tuck is an English sword that was a variation of the longsword. Straight and stiff, this weapon was designed to fight against plate armor or mail. It had no cutting edge and only a point. Originally, it was hung from the saddle when on horseback and from the belt when on foot. As the tuck evolved, it was carried in a scabbard.

For gifts, displays, collections and reenactments, our English swords for sale are designed and crafted to look and feel like the original weapons that were produced centuries ago.
