The success of the Roman sword lies in the fact that its design has been continuously adapted throughout time in order to overcome shortcomings on the battlefield. Roman swordsmiths based design changes on the technology of other cultures, and as a result, many different types of Roman swords emerge, each with its own purpose.
The Roman short sword had a blade that was short and double-edged with a diamond point tip. There are five basic types of short swords. Those with longer points were more effective for piercing heavy metal armor, while those with shorter points were better for use against unarmored enemies. The Gladius Hispaniensis, a sword from Spain with an imposing total length of 34", was the perfect weapon for chariot warfare. Simply called Gladius these days, this large weapon allowed soldiers to plow through battle lines quickly. As Roman warfare developed, the Romans adopted the use of cavalry and formed their own navy. It would not be long before the Spatha became the Roman cavalry’s weapon of choice due to its far reach in mounted combat.
Want to relive the glorious gladiator days? Our Roman swords for sale make excellent display items as well as props for reenactments.
