Viking Swords
Heavy and unwieldy – these are the words commonly used to describe a Viking sword. However, this is a misconception made popular by movies such as The Thirteenth Warrior, wherein the lead character could barely lift his sword and use it for fighting. The typical Viking swords of the 9th and 10th centuries were regularly used for chopping and cutting. These weapons had a long, straight blade that was slightly tapered, a wide central fuller, and two edges. If you are looking for swords gifts, our Viking swords for sale are high quality reproductions that will satisfy even the most discriminating collector.

The Viking sword is a form of spatha. It originated from the Migration Period sword in the 8th century and, with the appearance of larger crossguards, evolved into the arming sword in the 11th century. Since Viking swords were not easy to make, they were uncommon, expensive and symbols of high status. During the Saga Age, very few warriors had swords. Of the more than 100 weapons found in Iceland’s Viking Age pagan burials, only less than 20 are swords.
In his 1919 book De Norske Vikingsverd ("The Norwegian Viking Swords"), historian Jan Petersen introduced the most widely used classification of Viking Age swords, with 26 different types labeled A-Z. In 1927, R. E. M. Wheeler narrowed Petersen’s typology down to nine groups, numbered I-IX. Viking swords of the 9th and 10th centuries typically had an average length of 37 inches, two edges, a central fuller, a long blade, a guard with forward curving quillons, and a wooden handle covered with bone, leather, or brass. A Viking sword blade was generally forged by hand from high carbon steel.
