Nodachi Swords
The nodachi sword is a lengthy two-handed Japanese weapon. While it is prevalent in popular culture and can be seen in video games such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, it was in fact rarely used historically due to its atypical size and weight. Nodachi swords were utilized by foot soldiers against cavalry, and while they were effective, they were not often used. If you are looking for a remarkable piece to add to your sword collection, then a nodachi will certainly not fail to impress with its large size. Swords.com carries high quality nodachi forged by well-known modern sword makers.

The terms "nodachi" and "odachi" are often incorrectly interchanged, but they refer to two different weapons. “Nodachi” means “field sword” and “odachi” means “large tachi”. While a nodachi sword is similar in general appearance and design to a tachi, it is a lot longer. It measures about five feet long with a tsuka (hilt) of more than 15 inches – truly a formidable sword. It was intended for open field engagements and fighting against cavalry. Though its length made it unsuitable for close quarter combat, it was ideal for battling from horseback. Nodachi swords were usually used instead of polearms because their length could cut down an enemy and his horse in one go.
Due to its immense size and weight, the nodachi sword was difficult to use and could only be wielded with a single hand by the strongest and most experienced warriors. Although they were effective against cavalry and had a better cutting capability and range than the katana, nodachi swords were uncommonly used because more strength was needed to wield them correctly, the blades were more difficult to forge than regular swords, and other weapons like the nagamaki or naginata were just as effective in the same role on the battleground.
