Shirasaya
Shirasaya is a type of plain wooden Japanese sword mounting made up of a saya (scabbard) and a tsuka (hilt). It is worn by a Japanese sword when it is in storage or on display and will not be used for a period of time. A shirasaya sword does not have a tsuba (guard) which gives it good balance and prevents the hand from sliding to the blade, nor does it have proper tsuka-ito (handle wrapping); thus, it would be more difficult and quite dangerous to use. Swords.com carries quality shirasaya swords including shirasaya katana from Cheness cutlery that are suitable for displays and collections.
