Samurai swords are commonly differentiated by their lengths. Swords whose blades are 24 inches or more fall into the long sword, or Daito category. Katana samurai swords, the long sword of choice in feudal Japan, has now become a favorite of many collectors. Japanese samurai swords between 12 and 24 inches are in the short sword, or Shoto category. The wakizashi is an example of such a sword. Blades of 12 inches and under are called tanto.

The samurai sword is often used as a synonym to refer to a 'Katana'. Samurais were a middle to upper class of warriors serving the Japanese nobility. They in fact used a number of weapons - some were Japanese samurai swords, like katana swords, wakizashi or the tanto (technically a knife), although samurais were known to also use spears (called naginata) and bows. The Japanese samurai practiced strict adherence to a code called the Bushido (or the Way of the Warrior) - it's in this set of written rules that samurai swords were depicted as their warriors' soul, thereby sealing their association as samurai swords.
