The samurai sword is often considered the greatest sword ever made by swords enthusiasts. This is because Japanese swords masters used very advanced methods in construction and ornamentation even in the earliest periods of forging in Japan. The sword represents the national spirit of the nation, paying special attention to detail and craftsmanship.
While it is widely known that swords are a very important part of Japan's rich cultural heritage, it is important to note just how important they really are. Samurai swords part of Japan's Three Sacred Treasures, which are items that represent the primary virtues of the country. The virtue that the sword represents is valor, which is a very important quality of the Japanese warrior. To be a courageous combatant was a key tenet of the samurai, who would wield a fearsome Japanese sword while wearing full battle regalia.
There are many varieties of samurai swords to consider. The earliest form of those weapons, according to historians on the subject, featured a blade that wasn't curved and only sharp on one side. Some of the early katana swords had blades up to four feet in length. After using this type in battle, these antique swords slowly evolved to include a cutting edge on both sides of the blade. These later versions also included a handguard and were so long they could almost be considered spears.
The early samurai sword described above was a war tool primarily used for stabbing strokes, and was considered ineffective for any other stroke. However, by the ninth century, these swords evolved once again, this time with a curved blade, allowing for the user to slash at his enemy. This design of the samurai swords brought Japan into the Golden Age of Sword Making. This model of the sword was an incredible advantage to the mounted warrior, who could lean down and slash away at his opponent on the ground, often with devastating results. While this curved Japanese katana sword was originally forged with the long blade of its ancestor, the warriors soon realized that having such a long blade was in fact a detriment to them, as they were heavier than necessary, and therefore difficult to swing and slash at a foe.
Changing the shape and length of the blade throughout the history of the Japanese sword also affected the way the samurai would carry his weapon. For example, the mounted warrior originally would wear his sword in a scabbard with the sharp edge facing downward. However, he would have to pull his weapon up and outward to avoid cutting his horse, which would take extra time and possibly put the samurai in grave danger. So in time, the warrior, both mounted and on foot, eventually jettisoned the scabbard and wore the katana sword in his sash, with the cutting edge facing up.
Handmade swords have an honored tradition in Japan, which explains why they are so prized to sword hobbyists to this day. Modern-day forges have started to make blades that closely follow these ancient techniques. Paul Chen swords, Cold steel swords, United Cutlery swords, Cheness Cutlery swords, Dynasty Forge swords are some of the better known brands in that category.
